Introduction

Engineering plastics have played a major role in the processing and packaging of food for many years. Many of the positive properties of plastics (e.g. good mechanical properties or high chemical resistance) have proven their worth in handling food.

Plastics for the food industry

Engineering plastics are frequently used in the following areas of application in the food industry:

  • Meat, fish and poultry processing
  • Production of dairy products
  • Production of baked goods and pasta
  • Production of confectionery

Plastics can also come into direct contact with food, especially in machine components (for example in filling, mixing or portioning systems). There are numerous EU and US legal regulations that must be observed. The aim of these regulations is to prevent harmful influences caused by the migration of substances.

Product-related certificates of conformity are mandatory for plastics that come into contact with food. For exports to the USA and many Asian countries, the regulations of the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) apply. For Europe, Regulations (EC) No. 1935/2004, (EU) No. 10/2011 (migration measured on the semi-finished product) and (EC) No. 2023/2006 have come into force.

Product safety at KUNDERT is guaranteed by the complete traceability of plastics for the food sector. The manufacturers of KUNDERT semi-finished plastic products comply with the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice (GMP) for materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.
