Plastics for the food industry
Technical plastics have played an important role for many years in the processing and packaging of food. Many positive properties of plastic have proven to be successful in the handling of food, for example, its excellent mechanical properties and high chemical resistance. Technical plastics are often used in the following areas of application in the food industry:
- Processing of meat, fish and poultry
- Manufacture of dairy products
- Production of bread and pastry products
- Production of confectionary
The plastic may also come into contact with the food, especially with machine components (e.g. filling, mixing or portioning systems). In these instances there are numerous statutory regulations from the EU and the USA that have to be observed. These rules are designed to exclude the possibility of harmful effects as a result of the migration of substances.
It is absolutely essential (or even mandatory) for plastics that come into contact with food to have the relevant certificate of compliance for the specific product(s). The provisions of the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) apply to exports to the USA and many of the countries in Asia. The following Regulations are in force for European markets: (EC) no. 1935/2004, (EU) no. 10/2011 (migration measured in semi-finished products) and (EC) no. 2023/2006.
KUNDERT ensures product safety for the food sector by means of consistent traceability of the plastics. The manufacturers of KUNDERT semi-finished plastic products comply with the stipulations of the Regulation (EC) no. 2023/2006 for good manufacturing practice(GMP) for materials and goods that are to come into contact with food.
